Which ACCA Paper Should You Take First After Exemptions?

ACCA paper after exemptions guide showing different ACCA papers and how to choose your first exam

Exemptions change where you start, but they don’t change the rules. ACCA fixes the level you must work through, and you choose the paper inside it. That second part is where most students get stuck, so this blog covers both: what ACCA actually requires, and how I would pick a first paper once the exemptions are in.

ACCA Paper After Exemptions: What Do the Progression Rules Allow?

ACCA’s exam progression rules say exams must be taken in modular order, meaning Applied Knowledge first, then Applied Skills, then Strategic Professional. Inside a module you can attempt the papers in any order. There is one catch. If you want to enter exams from the next module, you must also enter every outstanding exam in your current module.

Two more points from ACCA’s rules matter here. The Ethics and Professional Skills Module can be taken at any point after Applied Knowledge, but ACCA recommends finishing it before you attempt any Strategic Professional exam. And ACCA’s exam sessions run in March, June, September and December, with the December 2026 session being the one on its India fees page.

Notice what is missing. ACCA’s rules don’t say which Applied Skills paper must come first. Anything you read about the “right” order inside a module is a recommendation, including mine below.

Step one: find your starting level

Look at what you are still missing, because that sets your level before any choice is made.

If you still owe any Applied Knowledge paper (BT, MA or FA), that is your starting point, and you can sit those three in any order. If you are exempt from all three but owe Applied Skills papers, you start in Applied Skills. If you are exempt from all of Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills, you move on to the ethics module and then Strategic Professional.

Most students with partial exemptions land in the middle case, so I’ll spend most of this blog there.

Starting in Applied Skills: how to pick the first paper

Here is how I would choose, in order of importance.

Pick the paper closest to your daily work. If you handle company law matters in your job, LW feels familiar. If you prepare tax computations, TX does. A first paper that connects to something you already know builds confidence, and confidence matters when the next five papers feel big.

Think about what feeds what. ACCA doesn’t force an order, but many tuition providers suggest taking FR before AA and FM, and PM before APM later, because the later paper leans on the earlier one. Treat that as common advice, not a rule. If you already know where you want to go at Strategic Professional, work backwards. Plan AFM, APM, ATX or AAA, and sit the matching Applied Skills paper well before it.

Don’t start with the paper you fear most. It is tempting to “get it over with”, but a failed first attempt costs a full exam fee and a lot of morale. For the December 2026 session, an Applied Skills exam is £151 (about ₹19,328 at an illustrative ₹128 per pound) on standard entry and £387 (about ₹49,536) on late entry. Start where a pass is likely, then build up to the harder ones.

And don’t overload the first session. ACCA lets you choose how many papers you take at a time, up to four per cycle under its progression rules. For a first sitting after a gap, I would take one paper, or two at most, and learn how your study routine actually works.

ACCA Paper After Exemptions: What If You Start at Strategic Professional?

If you hold exemptions from all of Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills, your first task is not a Strategic Professional exam. It is the Ethics and Professional Skills Module, priced at £83 (about ₹10,624). ACCA says it can be taken after Applied Knowledge, and recommends completing it before your first Strategic Professional paper.

After that, my view is to start with Strategic Business Leader. It is a case study exam built around three compulsory tasks, and it rewards the professional skills the ethics module introduces. Exemptions save you technical papers, but they don’t give you practice at writing a report under time pressure, so give SBL real preparation rather than treating it as a formality.

Remember the same-session rule

Suppose you have one Applied Skills paper left and badly want to start Strategic Professional. ACCA’s rule says you may enter a Strategic Professional exam in the same session only if you also enter all outstanding Applied Skills exams. You can’t leave one behind. If that sounds like too much for one sitting, finish Applied Skills first.

Money and timing check

Each exemption carries a fee, £84 (₹10,752) for an Applied Knowledge paper and £111 (₹14,208) for an Applied Skills paper, as shown on ACCA’s India fees page. ACCA lines its exemption closing dates up with its exam sessions, so sort your exemptions out before the session you are aiming for. Standard entry for December 2026 closes on 2 November 2026 and late entry on 9 November 2026. Booking early is the cheapest decision you can make.

ACCA has also announced a redesigned qualification. Its transition pages explain how current students are affected, so read them once before you lock in a long plan.

ACCA Paper After Exemptions: A Quick Way to Decide

Work out your starting level from your exemptions. Pick the paper nearest your real work. Check that it supports a later Options paper you plan to take. Book it at standard entry. That four-step check settles most cases in ten minutes.

FAQs

1. Can I sit any paper first after exemptions?

You can choose any paper within your module, but you need to finish the modules in order.

2. Can I enter a Strategic Professional paper while one Applied Skills paper is pending?

Only if you also enter all outstanding Applied Skills exams in the same session. ACCA’s rule is that you must enter every outstanding exam in your current module to sit exams in the next one.

3. Do I need the ethics module before my first Strategic Professional paper?

ACCA says it can be taken at any point after Applied Knowledge. It recommends completing it before attempting any Strategic Professional exam, so I would treat it as the first thing to do at that level.

4. Does ACCA set an order for the Applied Skills papers?

No. ACCA’s progression rules leave the order inside a module to you. Suggestions like FR before AA come from tuition providers and are advice, not requirements.

5. How many papers should I sit in one session?

That is your call. ACCA’s progression rules page states a maximum of four papers per exam cycle, but most students do better with fewer. After a break from study, one or two papers is a sensible start.
